From 2013 to 2015, Dancing Without Borders was one of the main organizers of the One Billion Rising Movement. The dance events was an invitation to all survivors of violence & those who love them to break the silence and release their stories -politically, spiritually and outrageously. People from 170+ countries joined thousands of community healing dance events.

IMPACT IN SAN FRANCISCO, BAY AREA

  • 2000 participants danced in front of SF City Hall on February 14th, 2013
  • 500 women of all ages and walks of life accompanied by a few men participated in the flashmob at Justin Herman Plaza.
  • The flashmob video went viral.

In 2013, Dancing Without Borders partnered up with the restorative justice program of San Francisco to lead a series of dance workshops in the men and women jails. The program was a huge success. As a result, it inspired many jails and prisons across the nation to join the One Billion Rising Movement during the years that followed. In San Francisco, dance has been part of the restorative justice program ever since. A strong seed was planted.
